Oribe
Through the gradual accumulation of inspiration and practice, along with trust in the hidden processes of my subconscious, I, as an artist, aim to create objects that are beautiful, meaningful, and, most importantly, useful. These vessels aim to express my subconscious creative drive through a variation on Japanese Oribe style, which I had initially rejected, but, through some hidden process, grew to appreciate as I deepened my ceramic practice. The vessels are a proof-of-concept for various methods of forming: slab building, slab and coil, and wheel throwing, intended to showcase the extent of my developed skills. The iris flowers, drawn in an ink-brush style, build upon my previous exploration of the flower through linocut. In truth, I cannot name any specific reason that this flower blooms in my work, and I see this as a manifestation of that same mystery that drew me to ceramics as a medium.
